Measured Building Survey of England's Oldest Pub, Hertfordshire

Terrain Surveys completed a full building measured survey of Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, ready for a £1 million restoration and redevelopment of this eighth century public house.

Having stood on the same site for over 1,200 years, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans has played host to Oliver Cromwell, been used as a cock fighting pit and most recently been a much loved public house in the historic area of St Albans.

Christo Tofalli took over the pub as Landlord in 2012 and wishes to redevelop, restore and extend the building in order to preserve the pub as a thriving business and a heritage site.

In order to undertake this transformation, Christo commissioned Terrain Surveys, who undertook a full measured survey, including floor plans, elevations and a topographical survey. These have been passed to Rogan Gale-Brown Architects who intend to submit a planning application later this year.

Christo commented “I was delighted with the team at Terrain Surveys and their professional approach to our unique redevelopment project. They worked quickly and efficiently and thanks to their extensive knowledge and expertise, were able to provide a first class survey to ensure our restoration plans can get underway.”

Restoration plans include constructing octagon shaped canopies over a rear seating area which will need to be sunken in keeping with the existing building, all whilst maintaining the historic façade.

Colin Wheeldon, Director at Terrain Surveys, commented “It was a privilege to work on such a historical site using the latest, modern technologies to achieve a sympathetic restoration. We look forward to seeing the works completed and allowing this pub continue serving community of St Albans, whilst remaining a historic site for all to enjoy.”
