3D Models of World War II Fighter Pens at RAF Coltishall
Working with Mason Navarro Pledge structural and civil engineers and Purcell architects, Terrain Surveys have produced 3D models of the World War II fighter pens at RAF Coltishall in Norfolk; a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The survey supports a condition report for Norfolk County Council’s Historic Environment Services.
The air base was opened in 1940 and played a key role in World War II as a bomber base. Each fighter pen protected an individual Spitfire or Hurricane and its crew, whilst on the ground. During the Cold War, the base was home to Jaguar jet fighters and search and rescue helicopters.
Having purchased the site from the MOD following its closure in 2006, Norfolk County Council are working with developers on potential plans for a museum and heritage centre.
