From Pointcloud straight to Revit
Fortunately, there is another way. Your surveyor can complete the 3D modelling for you – going straight from laser scan to 3D Revit model, saving you time and cost in the process. This can also reduce inaccuracies and assumptions made by interpreting 2D drawings.
Revit and other BIM applications have changed the way the surveying and 3D modelling process works. Your surveyor is now able to scan the building in 3D with millimetre accuracy, then interpret the pointcloud into 3D elements within a Revit model to meet your specification.
The extent of work required depends on the purpose of the survey. If you plan to extend a building for example, you might be looking for a high level of detail on one elevation, with less detail and accuracy elsewhere. By letting your surveyor know your requirements, you can save considerable time and cost for this process.
Taking this direct route from laser scanning to a 3D model will result in a 3D model with accurate measurements and elemental details such as doors and windows, greatly reducing your time and freeing up design resources.
More information about specifications for levels of detail within a model, are available from the NBS and the BIM Forum
By speaking to your surveyor about your output requirements before commissioning the survey, you could save considerable time and cost.
