Measured Surveys of Youngsbury, Hertfordshire

Overview

Terrain Surveys were delighted to undertake various measured surveys at the Youngsbury Estate near Hertford, Hertfordshire, over a several-year period. Working for various architecture practices, we proudly delivered a topographical survey and measured building surveys to aid both development and conservation efforts of this remarkable family home. The Younsbury Estate, which was originally built in 1775, broadly comprises of the main residence, Youngsbury House, several ancillary buildings including the Grade II* listed stable block, and gardens landscaped by “England’s Greatest Gardener”, Capability Brown.

The Challenge

Our experienced team made the short journey from our Hertfordshire head office to undertake a topographical survey to the area surrounding Younsbury House. As with all topographical surveys, we were to capture various site features, such as buildings, landscaping, trees and levels. We were to also locate and lift all visible surface and foul water manhole covers, with cover sizes, invert levels, pipe sizes and direction of flow all to be recorded on the topographical survey drawings.

As well as the topographical survey, we were tasked with delivering a comprehensive set of measured building survey drawings. Our experienced team of surveyors produced floor plans of the main house and staff flats from the lower ground floor to the roof, with internal details such as walls, structural elements, staircases, doors and windows recorded. Both external and internal elevations were produced, with the external elevations of the main house and staff flats showing details such as doors and windows with fenestration, roof detail and stonework of this most impressive Georgian home.

The internal elevations were produced of the main rooms and staircases on the ground and first floor, showing features including structural and architectural elements, fireplaces, doors and windows. To further aid internal development plans, sections were also instructed, with three cross sections showing all detail through the property. Further to this, reflected ceiling plans were also produced to the main rooms and staircases on the ground and first floor of the house.
